Church square Pretoria CBD to receive an influx of church leaders. Breaking news, Will a protest help against the closing of churches?

Genesis

Church leaders from different areas around  the country will gather at Church square in Pretoria Central to have a peaceful protest against the closure of churches today at 10h00 am. This follows the President’s speech which took place on the 28th of December 2020.

We spoke to one of the organisers, Moafrika wa Maila, who shared what they hope to achieve with the protest. After listening to the President’s announcement and finding out that different things were amended except church gatherings, Moafrika felt that something had to be done. “I felt that  this has to be challenged constitutionally”, he says. It turns out Moafrika wa Maila was not the only one who felt that something had to be done, instead there were many other people who shared the same concerns. Although there have been a number of attempts to get through to the government, this will be the first of its kind where church leaders from different churches will come together themselves to take a stand against the closure of churches.

With the influx of support from church leaders and even organizations such as The South African Church Forum, the organizers have also had their share of backlash. “Because this is the first of its kind, I am highly attacked. There are many oppositions against this, they call us ‘carnal’, ‘non-spiritual’ and that we are fighting a carnal warfare not a spiritual warfare”, says Moafrika. He responds to this by saying,” Perspective and interpretation are always the case when it comes to the bible but we shouldn’t dwell on the differences more than the similarities”.

The organizers say that Covid-19 safety precautions will be put in place and rules such as screening, wearing of masks, social distancing as well as sanitizing will be adhered to.

  1. I think church is considered a social gathering hence they are still closed. That however, doesn’t stop the church leaders from counselling people at their respective homes or at church with the social distancing precautions heeded.
The church should just find another way to help the people and keep the work of God moving without disobeying the President’s law
