Nkateko Nokeri also known as “Miss Angelic” was born in the township of Nkowankowa.
This township has become a music hub and has birthed many amazing musicians. She dates
her love for music from childhood. While reminiscing, she chuckles as she remembers how
as a child her father, who was a musician as well would force her to sing and then make
recordings of them singing together. As tiresome as that would have looked in her childlike
eyes ,it became a building block to who she is today.
Not only is she a singer but a songwriter as well. ” I would pretty much say my song writing
has a very weird twist to it, the songs come to mind in the most unexpected ways”, she says.
This could be from doing simple tasks such as cooking or performing daily routines , the
songs come knocking at the door. One significant time was after she gave birth to her
daughter and while lying on the hospital bed, lyrics entered through the door of her mind.
In her music journey, she emphasises on the importance of having a team that carries the
same vision. Each team member can be exceptional in what they do but if they are not led
by the same vision it tarnishes the end goal. She remembers how on one account a new
song came to her while she was singing on stage. Instead of going into a panic frenzy
because the song was not rehearsed, her team together with her delivered the song
beautifully because they were in sync. During the interview, she also gushes over her
husband who she says has been the best support system in all aspects of her life. Being a
mother, a wife and a musician all at the same time is not easy but it makes the weight
lighter to carry when you have someone to carry it with.
Last year she released a single titled “U na Rhirandzu Yesu“ and this year an album titled
“Big God”. Both the album and the single were inspired by personal experiences. “I have
been through many challenges in my life ,but I have seen the love of God in all
circumstances,” she adds. Her wish is for her music to become personal to everyone who
listens to it, her being on stage shouldn’t be just a mere performance but a worship
experience. Her music has touched the hearts of many and continues to do so even today.
