Nghamula’s Kitchen: The legacy

Genesis

When you enter Flora Park you are greeted by a radiant smile on a trailer with “Nghamula’s Kitchen” written in bold. What is Nghamula’s kitchen you ask? Well today you are about to find out.

Nghamula’s Kitchen is a small business co-owned by Innocent Masinge, Tumelo Lebea, Vutlhari Gumede and Brighton Mokgola. It is situated in Tzaneen, Flora Park. The idea of starting the business came about after the group of friends lost a very dear friend, the late Nghamula Mabasa and wanted to keep his legacy alive. “Given the current state of the economy and also the unemployment rate in our country, starting the business allowed us to get employment while simultaneously using the very same business to honour our friend”, says Tumelo. Deciding on what type of business this was going to be was not something they had to bump their heads against the wall for, the bunch loves cooking so it seemed natural to go into fast foods.

It was as if Nghamula gave them a go ahead when Innocent won four numbers at a lucky draw and they were able to get capital to buy the trailer. Close friends and family also gave a helping hand by contributing some funds to keep the business running and afloat. This was a team effort and they were blessed to have the right people on their side. Of course, the beginning of every establishment has its challenges and these young men where not exempted from them. At some point throwing in the towel seemed like the thing to do but looking at where they are today compared to then, they are reaping the fruits of perseverance.

We got the opportunity to interview a few of their customers, Rendani Matlou, Precious Selane and Lola Sikoshule. ”Nghamula’s kitchen is more than just a place where we buy food, here we meet different people, hangout and have a good time”, says Precious.  “The food is amazing”, says Lola. “This is an example of a thriving small business which accommodates people of all kinds” ,adds Rendani. The girls say this is something Flora Park needed and for those days when you don’t want to prepare anything in the kitchen, you know just the place to go.

When speaking about the role that God has played in their business, Innocent boldly declares that God has played a very big role. The wisdom to even start the business is something that he knows they received from Him. He also adds that they are cushioned by the prayers of a lot of people, and they too continuously pray for the success of the business so that it continues to blossom.

The young men would like to express their gratitude to Nghamula’s mother and brother, who gave them the go ahead to start the business and for the love and support they receive from them. They have a great circle of friends who they speak highly of and pour their hearts out in gratitude to. With this said, not forgetting the people of Flora Park and all those who have contributed in any kind to the business and who continuously show their support on a daily basis. Adding  to the list, Innocent furtherexpresses gratitude to his wife and daughter who give him a reason to get out of bed every day and to keep pushing. “ Running this business has been exciting and the love we’ve received is overwhelming, not only have I found friends, but we have become family”, says Vutlhari.

In a heart-felt conclusion to the interview, they state that the fact that Nghamula’s mother wakes up every morning knowing that through the business her son’s name continues to live on is what gives them the most pleasure in doing what they do.

So, if you are near Flora Park, head on to Nghamula’s kitchen to get more than just food but an experience.
