They say Your Son died for my sins, but it seems He forgot to die for my skin ~ Masai Sepuru
Today we are with the amazing, beautiful, talented and thought provoking Masai Sepuru. This young man is an artist of note, a poet, script writer, director, set designer and storyteller. He comes from the beautiful province of Limpopo and currently resides in Pretoria.
He shares with us that everyday life is what inspires his work. “I think everyone has a story to tell and if they won’t tell it, I will”, he confidently shares. He adds that he is the echo of the world, “I listen to the world and I echo back in my work”. His work is mostly about young black men today and he shares that it is because he himself is a young black man and he is surrounded by black men too.
The message he tries to portray to his audience is one about accepting one’s personal truths. “A society can only move forward when people are being honest about how they feel or who they are”, he shares. His work strives to provoke individuality in his audience. He also adds that, “people shouldn’t be afraid of being wrong”. He believes that honesty is better than hypocrisy on any day.
He shares that God is his go to all the time. “Most of my poems are in question form”, he shares. He adds that some questions God might answer and others not but what matters is that the question is out there. He trusts that God is in all that is around us, so His answers will not always be conventional. “It [answer from God] could be revealed through a book or a conversation or a song”, he shares.
Masai shares that we should expect more from him in the coming future. He will be putting more of himself out there. “I’ve performed most of my work, it’s time I let other people perform it”, he shares. He has written and now people shall perform, clearly Masai is meant for great things in life. “The hope is to tour both the country and the world”, he adds.
